Before buying on Prime Day, make sure the reviews are legitimate

Be careful shopping online, because you can't believe everything you read.

HOUSTON — If you’re addicted to online shopping, you know reviews are your best friend.

However, fake reviews can be your worst enemy.

The question is, how can you tell the difference? Experts say Fakespot.com can help.

If you see a product you like on retail sites like Amazon, Best Buy or Walmart, paste the URL into Fakespot. The technology analyzes reviews looking for suspicious patterns and incentivized reviews. Fakespot then provides a letter grade rating, based on how many reviews seem legitimate.

Keep in mind: having fake reviews doesn’t necessarily mean the product is bad.

It’s just a reminder that you can’t believe everything you read.
