IRVING — Former Dallas defensive tackle Josh Brent is back with the Cowboys and working in the team's scouting department, owner Jerry Jones said.

Brent's return comes four months after announcing his retirement in May and roughly 10 months since playing in a game with the team for the first time since being convicted of intoxication manslaughter in the 2012 death of former teammate Jerry Brown.

"Josh is doing things for us in the scouting department," Jones said Thursday. "It's good to have him out here. We want him out here."

Brent was initially sentenced to 180 days in jail and 10 years of probation. He spent five months behind bars before he was released in June 2014 and sent to a treatment facility for 45 days.

He was suspended for the first 10 games of the 2014 season by the NFL for violating the league's personal conduct policy.

Brent made his official return to the game Dec. 4 against the Chicago Bears.
