Astros pitcher Francis Martes suspended after testing positive for performance-enhancing substance

HOUSTON — Houston Astros pitcher Francis Martes has been suspended 80 games for violating Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

MLB said Martes tested positive for Clomiphene, a performance-enhancing substance. His 80-game suspension will go into effect at the start of the 2019 season.

The Houston Astros released the following statement on Martes’ suspension:

“The Houston Astros fully support MLB’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment program. We hope that Francis can learn from this experience and that he returns to have a successful career. We will not comment further on this matter.”
