You ask, we answer: Matthew Boling's 'national' record

KHOU 11 viewer Byron J. noticed Boling's time in the 100 is not listed as a national record by Track & Field News, which claims to be the bible of the sport since 1948.

HOUSTON — Is Matthew Boling's national record at the UIL Championships a national record?

KHOU 11 viewer Byron J. noticed Boling's time in the 100 is not listed as a national record by Track & Field News, which claims to be the bible of the sport since 1948.

Boling ran a 10.13 on Saturday to set a national record. However, Track & Field News lists a 10.00 run by North Carolina student-athlete in 2014.

"Trentavis Friday ran 10.00 in 2014," Byron wrote in an email to KHOU 11 Sports' Jason Bristol. "Boling ran 10.13. So how does Boling have the national record? Where did you get your information (from)?"

As it turns out, this "national record" comes down to who's keeping the records.

We discovered Track & Field News doesn't refer to Boling's time as a "national record" because it was a National Federation of State High School Associations "high school-only" event. The NFHS recognizes Boling's time as its national record.

Track & Field News recognizes Friday's 10.00 at 2014 USATF Juniors as the national high school record, it explained on Twitter. The USATF Juniors includes both high school and college student-athletes.
