Rice swimmers hit the pool despite freezing temps

The cold couldn't keep the Rice University Women's Swim Team out of the pool for the weekly early Tuesday.

HOUSTON – Some are brave enough to get wet in the seriously cold weather Tuesday morning for sport.

The cold couldn't keep the Rice University Women's Swim Team out of the pool for the weekly early Tuesday.

"Rain, sunshine snow – only time we won’t swim is if its lightening in the area," one athlete said.

With temperatures at just 39 degrees, plus a 20-degree windchill, means they're still diving in.

They're pretty crazy right?

“No we're not, cause it's warm in here, y'all are the crazy ones," one swimmer said.

Our news crew was standing on the sidelines, shivering in the cold, while the swimmers were in a pool heated to 80 degrees.

“Once you get in its fine," Coach Seth Huston said.

The team says it's the mad dash to get in the pool initially. Then of course when it's time to get out that gets you.

One swimmer said them become “track stars” when they head to the locker room.

But the workout isn't bad. The water is their safe haven from the chill.
