Tips to avoid scammers who want to 'repair' your home after storm damage

The Better Business Bureau warns about “storm chasers” who take advantage of people trying to get repairs done on their homes.

HOUSTON — Homeowners in Southeast Texas are cleaning up after last week’s storms. For some, that means repairing damage to property.

The Better Business Bureau warns about “storm chasers” who take advantage of people trying to get repairs done on their homes.

Here are some tips from the BBB to avoid being a victim of a repair scam:

1.    Research the person you’re hiring. Don’t forget to contact references, check reviews and thoroughly research the company you’re going to use for the job.

2.    Call your insurance company ASAP. Contact your agent to find out if your damage is covered. Don’t forget to take pictures and videos and save any hotel receipts.

3.    Be wary of door-to-door salespeople. Don’t fall for a scammer with “leftover material” from another job who shows up at your door.

4.    Avoid high pressure sales. Be selective about who you hire to do the job. The BBB suggest getting at least 3 estimates before hiring someone to do the job.

5.    Get a written contract with anyone you hire. Get a price breakdown, contact information and a start and end date for the work included in that contract.

6.    Verify that the business is insured. When you find a contractor, request a current insurance certificate covering personal liability, property damage and workman’s compensation.

7.    Don’t pay cash and never pay all the money up front. You might be asked for a deposit but the BBB suggests not paying more than one-third of the job in the beginning.
