TxDOT singles out Houston's most dangerous interchanges

Anyone who drives Houston’s highways probably has their own list of the most dangerous spots.

HOUSTON -- Anyone who drives Houston s highways probably has their own list of the most dangerous spots.

According to TxDOT, the most dangerous highway interchange in Houston and perhaps all of Texas - is the 610 W Loop at Southwest Freeway. The interchange has been the scene of 562 accidents between 2007 and 2009.

Coming in 2nd is the Northwest Freeway at the 610 Loop. There have been 268 accidents there in the same time frame.

According to statistics, Gulf Freeway at 610 Loop is the 3rd most dangerous interchange with 256 accidents in the three-year span.

The North Freeway at 610 N Loop is the 4th most dangerous with 214 accidents and the 5th is Katy Freeway at Beltway 8 with 208 accidents.

TxDOT blames speeding, tailgating, weaving through traffic and impaired driving as the biggest causes for wrecks. Another big problem: cutting into lines of backed-up traffic.

The delivery drivers at Breen s Florist aren t surprised. When asked what the most dangerous areas are, they rattle off the same list.

Like the exchanges when you re coming off 610 West or 59 South, said Mamie Luevano, a delivery driver for Breen s Florist.

Luevano has her own advice when you re heading towards a highway interchange.

You have to get over before you get there, said Luevano. And that s coming from someone who knows a lot about making special deliveries.
