Trudy Lynn and The History of Houston Blues

Living legend Trudy Lynn performs songs from her latest album

The blues is arguably the most important and influential musical genre in history, and Houston has made a bigger impact through its blues culture and history than most people realize.
Trudy Lynn, Houston’s “First Lady of the Blues,” grew up in the Fifth Ward and found her way to the blues through Club Matinee and Walter’s Lounge. She went on to perform for guitarist Clarence Green, then went solo and has been releasing music ever since, eventually being inducted into the Houston Music Hall of Fame in 2015. Today she sings songs off her latest album, “Blues Keep Knockin.’” For more information on Trudy Lynn, click here.
Trudy will be performing with Steve Krase and Dry Johnson Friday, November 30 at the Big Easy Social and Pleasure Club at 9:30pm. Click here for more.
Dan Oko has written an article detailing the history of the blues in Houston in the November / December 2018 issue of “Texas Journey Magazine.” It highlights the past, present and future of the blues, along with notable names, like Trudy Lynn, Bobby “Blue” Bland, Junior Walker, Johnny Ace, Big Mama Thornton, Albert Collins, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown and Lightning Hopkins.
Anthony Terry is the new president of the Houston Blues Society, a non-profit group bringing awareness to the blues and organizing concerts over the past 25 years, including a monthly blues jam on the last Thursday of every month at The Big Easy.
Houston Blues Society is hosting its holiday party on December 2 at the Pub Fountain in Stafford, TX, benefitting the Jimmy “T-99” Nelson Youth Scholarship Fund for youth showing musical promise. The event will feature Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, the 19-year old blues guitar phenom.
