Rescue, community step up to care for dog shot 4 times in Sugar Land

When officers found Valor, he was barely hanging on.

FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas — Law enforcement officers on Monday found a dog shot in Sugar Land.

Fort Bend County Animal Services said it is seeing this cruelty far too often. It's the second dog in the last two months, but this dog's injuries were far worse. He had been shot four times.

"The animal is totally gentle, that's the sad part," said Rene Vasquez, director of Fort Bend County Animal Services.

When officers found Valor, he was barely hanging on.

"The field officer was surprised with how much blood was on the animal," said Vasquez. "He could just see one hole."

But when they rushed him to a vet, they found a lot more. He'd been shot four times. The X-rays showed there was still a bullet inside.

"We saw the actual bullet was still lodged in his shoulder," Vasquez said. "But when they said it was an additional three shots, that was just crazy."

Belle's Buds Rescue heard about Valor's plight and knew they needed to do something to help.

"It's unbelievable what people do to animals," said Tammy Livingston. "It just makes no sense. It's heartbreaking."

Livingston is co-founder of the Belle's Buds Rescue. She met Valor Tuesday.

"He's so sweet," Livingston said. "He just walked right to me and melted into my arms."

Her focus now is finding him the home he deserves.

"Most importantly now he needs to be loved on," Livingston said. "He just need to know he's loved and not abused."

Belle's Buds helped organize a medical foster who will help Valor make a full recovery after he was riddled with gunfire.

"It's clearly a dog that wants to survive," Livingston said. "He wants to live, and he just needs us to help make that happen."
