HOUSTON — On Wednesday night, former Vice President Mike Pence spoke at Young America's Foundation's 43rd National Conservative Student Conference in downtown Houston.

He's encouraging everyone to get vaccinated, but said lockdowns and mandates shouldn't be necessary.

"As we do our part to put this in the past, we need to also stand firm that we can defeat this virus without lockdowns and mandates," Pence said.

Texas Governor Abbott is also standing firm that a mandate isn’t coming.

“One thing we know is that safe practices are important. That said, one thing we’ve learned along the way is that lockdowns are wrong during the course of pandemics,” said Abbott.

Even so, local mandates are popping up, like in the city of Houston, where workers are now required to mask up.

Other speakers at the conference included political advisor Stephen Miller.
