Houston councilman Dwight Boykins shows interest in running for mayor

Mayor Sylvester Turner may have another challenger in the November election.

HOUSTON — A former ally of  Mayor Sylvester Turner is now taking steps to run against him in the fall.

Councilmember Dwight Boykins filled out the paperwork to appoint a campaign treasurer Tuesday, Houston City Secretary Troy Lemon confirms.

That's the first step required before a candidate can begin raising campaign funds.

Boykins has been a vocal critic of Turner over Prop B, which would have given firefighters a massive raise while costing others their jobs. A judge ruled the proposition unconstitutional last month.

Boykins was born in Houston and he and his six brothers grew up in the South Union neighborhood.

He is a graduate of Stephen F. Austin High School and Texas Southern University.
