HOUSTON — A homeless woman was badly burned after police say someone set her on fire outside a strip mall early Wednesday.
The assault happened at the corner of South Kirkwood Road and High Star Drive in southwest Houston.
Houston Police say the woman was sleeping along the sidewalk when she woke up to find herself on fire. The 40-year-old told officers it was no accident and that a random man intentionally started the fire.
Fortunately, a good Samaritan from a nearby church saw her and rushed to drag her to safety. The good Samaritan also told police he saw a man near the woman.
Police are not sure if the man is also a good Samaritan or a potential suspect, but he was gone by the time the other man arrived to help her.
Police say there are surveillance cameras around the shopping center, so investigators will be going through those very carefully.
As for the woman, she was rushed to a local hospital. At last check, officers say she was still able to talk to them, so hopefully she will be able to make a speedy recovery.
Anyone with information on this case is urged to contact the HPD Major Assaults and Family Violence Division at 713-308-8800 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
