HOUSTON – A body was discovered by Houston firefighters late Tuesday morning as they were going to the rubble of a two-alarm fire in southeast Houston.

Family members have identified the victim as 30-year-old Shirley Cherian. Her cause of death has not been determined. Firefighters say her body was found on the third floor crouched near a closet, apparently trying to find a way to safety.

Officials are trying to figure out what sparked a huge fire that ripped through the condo complex. According to the Houston Fire Department, the fire started at 3:17 a.m. at the Briarwick Condos located in the 2700 block of Holly Hall near Highway 288.

Firefighters rescued two people who were unable to get to safety. One woman was sent to the hospital with burns.

It took more than an hour to get the blaze under control. Investigators say that foul play is not suspected.

The Red Cross is reportedly helping about 30 residents who were displaced. Many of them are being moved to temporary units in the complex.
