HOUSTON — A viewer asked our Verify team to look into whether the Republican Party would automatically back the incumbent – President Donald Trump – in the 2020 presidential election or if other candidates can attempt to get the nomination.
Neil Levesque, executive director of the New Hampshire Institute of Politics said yes, other Republicans can go up against the president.
A “primary challenge” takes place when an incumbent is challenged in the primary election by a member of their own party. It’s happened before when Pat Buchanan challenged President George H.W. Bush in 1992. Buchanan lost in the primary, and President Bush ultimately lost the election to President Bill Clinton.
