GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas -- Police have brought a felony charge against a grandmother who left her 2-year-old granddaughter in a hot car while shopping last week.

On June 22, Grand Prairie officers were called to outside of a Party City near Highway 360 and Camp Wisdom Road just before 3 p.m.

By the time police arrived at the scene, the girl had been removed from the car and a nearby store employee was performing CPR on the her. The grandmother had realized she had forgetten the child, but not before bystanders stepped in.

First responders took over the life-saving efforts and the girl eventually started breathing again before she was transported to Cook Children's Medical Center. However, the girl remained in critical condition "for several days," police said.

On Thursday, police arrested the grandmother, Maritza Charles, 60, without incident at the Grand Prairie Public Safety Building. She remains in the Grand Prairie Detention Center on a $10,000 bond.
