Former classmates: Teen double-murder suspect was 'nicest kid'

In the 911 call, the 17-year-old is eerily calm as he tells the dispatcher that he shot and killed his mother and sister. He said, "I'm not angry at them," but that he planned on killing "for a while now."

PARKER COUNTY A 17-year-old Parker County teen was arrested moments after calling 911 Thursday morning to tell dispatchers that he gunned down his mother and 15-year-old sister.

In a release, Sheriff Larry Fowler said investigators spent the morning questioning Jake Evans. He is being held without bond on a charge of capital murder of multiple persons. The department believes he acted alone.

Evans called 911 at 12:34 a.m. and told dispatchers that he shot and killed his mother, Jami Evans, 48, and his 15-year-old sister Mallory at their home in the 100 block of River Creek Lane in Anetta South.

I just thought it would be quick, you know?, Evans tells the dispatcher. I didn't want them to feel any pain, that's why I used a gun. But it's, like, everything went wrong.

Deputies responded and arrested Evans at the home without incident, Fowler said. His mother and sister were found dead in different rooms of their home, which is located inside a gated community.

The home where Jake Evans said he shot and killed his mother and sister is across the street from his grandparents' home. Jake's grandfather was a Fort Worth police officer 27 years.

In the 911 call, Evans is eerily calm as he tells the dispatcher of his mother and sister. He said, I'm not angry at them, but that he planned on killing for a while now. In the call, he said he told his sister his mother wanted to speak to her and shot her after she exited her room. He then said he found his mother and shot her.

When the operators asked him why, he said I don't really like peoples' attitude.

It's selfish to say, but they were suffocating me, in a way, Evans said. He later added, Obviously, I'm pretty, I guess, evil.

Aledo Independent School District Superintendent Stan Manning said Jake Evans and his sister both withdrew from the district earlier this year to be home schooled.

The 17-year-old told investigators and the 911 operator that he used a .22 revolver in the killings. Sources confirmed to News 8 the gun belonged to a relative. Fowler said the exact cause of death for both victims is pending autopsies by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner.

Fowler said the father and husband of the victims was in Washington, D.C. on business at the time of the murders. Also in the 911 call, Evans said the only medication he was taking at the time was for allergies.

In a statement, the Aledo Independent School District said Jami Evans worked as a teacher and an assistant principal from 1989 to 2004 at Coder and Stuard Elementary Schools. Mallory Evans was a student at Stuard Elementary and McAnally Intermediate School.

She was a sweet child that will be missed by her friends and school family, the release says.

Fowler said two other daughters no longer live at the home. Jake Evans has asked that no one in his family visit him.

Friends of Jake Evans said he is one of the nicest boys they know. They describe him as quiet and shy. He was an avid golfer and played at Aledo High, until he withdrew in January to be home schooled.

I just want people to know this action is not how we all know him, said Cole Wooten, who said he had been in school with Jake since kindergarten. They played golf together, too.

I really liked him, said classmate Clint McClellen. Nicest kid. Quiet, shy, kept to himself, but I liked that about him.

The Evans family attended a Methodist church in Aledo for many years. They recently moved to Holy Redeemer Catholic Church.

Jan Hudler had been part of a special counseling ministry with Jami Evans, and called her deeply spiritual.

Angelic, she said, when describing her friend. She was the kindest, sweetest person. I never heard her say a bad thing about anybody. And her family was the most important thing to her.

It's so incredible, Hudler continued. Shocking. I can't imagine this happening to someone like that.

The Aledo ISD's full statement is below:

Aledo ISD is deeply saddened to learn of the death of a former employee and a former student.

Jami Evans was a dedicated elementary teacher and assistant principal who worked in Aledo ISD for 15 years serving students at both Coder and Stuard Elementary from 1989 through 2004. Her dedication to her students and her love of learning was an inspiration to all who knew her.

We also mourn the death of Mallory Evans, a former elementary and intermediate school student. Mallory attended Stuard Elementary and McAnally Intermediate School. She was a sweet child that will be missed by her friends and school family.

The suspect in the shootings, Jacob Evans, is a former Aledo High School student who withdrew from school in January 2012 to be home schooled. He attended Aledo schools from elementary school until his withdrawal in January. He played football in middle school and played on the golf team in high school.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Evans family in this difficult time.
