It’s no surprise Houston and the cities around it are gaining new popularity every year.

Earlier this year, Sugar Land was named one of the fastest-growing cities in the nation, and it’s getting even bigger.

On Tuesday, the Sugar Land City Council unanimously voted to annex Greatwood and New Territory by the end of 2017. That would make the city more than 30 percent larger and increase the population from 87, 367 to more than 117,000 residents.

The process for the annexation began in November 2007. City officials say an “extensive public outreach effort” will be conducted during the next year, which includes an explanation of City and information about how to get involved.
