Rescued dog undergoing ‘painful’ medical treatment after wire cuts through flesh

A dog rescued in northwest Houston Saturday was found with wire around its neck. The wire was so tight that it had cut through the emaciated dog's neck.

HOUSTON — A dog found near a car dealership in northwest Houston is now in need of extensive medical care after wiring around its neck caused severe injuries.

An independent rescuer, Myriam Velarde, found Ralph after she received a tip of a dog roaming around looking for food near a dealership. Velarde found him with a wire roped tightly around his neck.

The wire, which was roped twice around Ralph's neck, had already cut through his flesh, showing muscle and tissue. The wound was also infested with maggots.

After feeding Ralph some dog food, an employee at a nearby car dealership helped cut the wire off the dog. Velarde then contacted Houston Houston K-911 for additional help. The organization helped get Ralph to Vergi for additional 24/7 healthcare.

"He is in pain and yet he is a friendly, gentle giant," wrote Houston K-911 on their Facebook page. "Betrayed and cruelly neglected by some heartless monster. He is safe now and on heavy pain medication. He is severely dehydrated and it will be a couple hours at minimum before he can be sedated to have a further evaluation and cleaning," the organization wrote. "This will be a very long road of treatment. Daily, painful treatment. Estimates run in the thousands."

The rescue is now hoping donations will help get Ralph the help he desperately needs. To donate, please click here.

Houston K-911 said they're working on filing a police report in hope that charges will be filed against the person(s) responsible.
