An off-duty officer shot at and chased down a robbery suspect on the freeway in northeast Houston late Friday night, police said.

According to the Houston Police Department, the shooting and chase happened along I-10 from Jacinto City into Houston.

The officer, identified as G. Olvera, an 8-year veteran with HPD, wasn't injured.

Police said Officer Olvera was off-duty at a gym in the 900 block of Mercury Road when he was approached by a woman who said she had been robbed while walking to her car. She then directed Officer Olvera to a white Dodge Ram pickup truck leaving the parking lot.

Police say that's when Officer Olvera got into his car and chased the suspect, eventually catching up to him at the East Freeway and Normandy. Officer Olvera pulled up to the driver's side of the truck, asked the suspect to stop the vehicle, and the suspect raised his hand as if he had a weapon.

Officer Olvera, fearing for his life, according to authorities, discharged his weapon at the suspect, who then fled the scene.

Officer Olvera continued to chase the suspect until he exited at North Wayside and hit a Metro bus, causing the truck to spin around and eventually stop. Officer Olvera got out of the car and instructed the suspect to show his hands, which came up holding an unknown object. Again,Officer Olvera discharged his weapon.

The suspect then ran from the scene. Officer Olvera searched in and around the suspect's vehicle, but was unable to locate him. Officials believe the suspect may have been picked up by another car along the freeway.

Police later found the suspect at the hospital.

The HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney's Office are investigating the incident.
