A Pearland police officer has died after a major crash early Sunday morning.

The crash occurred around 3:15 a.m. in the 2500 block of East Broadway Street near Liberty Drive in Pearland.

Police say the officer, identified as Endy Ekpanya, was responding to a non-emergency call and was traveling eastbound on Broadway Street when a woman driving a gray Chrysler westbound crossed over the middle lanes and slammed head-on into Ekpanya's patrol car.

Ekpanya was transported by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital where he later died. The woman was also transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital where she remains in serious condition.

State troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety are trying to determine whether the woman may have been intoxicated or under the influence.

Police say they do not have any witnesses to the accident. A passerby saw the drivers pinned inside the cars after the crash and called 911.

Jason Wells, public information officer with the Pearland Police Department, said it has been more than 40 years since a Pearland PD officer has died in the line of duty.

"These guys are out here every night. They work diligently and hard together to keep the families of Pearland safe. So to lose any officer, it is a complete devastation," Wells said.

"The only word that we can use to describe this is sad," said Lt. Onesimo Lopez with the Pearland PD. "We are saddened. We are devastated. This is not something that we expected. Definitely came as a shock to all of us."

Authorities say Ekpanya has been with the department since 2015 and is survived by his 2-year-old son and fiancée.
