Overflowing manholes flood downtown Houston streets

Water could be seen gushing out of manholes in downtown Houston Friday morning.

HOUSTON — The overnight rain in the Houston area caused problems for storm drains and sewers across the city.

As of mid-morning Friday, water levels in Buffalo Bayou next to the University of Houston-Downtown were still significantly higher than normal.

The good news: it was still well within its banks, several feet below flood stage, and dropping.

However, hours earlier, that area was a mess. Several feet of water covered the on and off ramps connecting Travis and Milam streets with the I-45 North Freeway.

A couple of drivers got stuck in the underpass and had to wade out with their belongings. Houston police blocked off those roads to traffic.

Later in the morning, a nearby block of Commerce Street was submerged. Water was gushing out of two manholes from the overwhelmed sewers below.

City crews fixed that issue and covered up the manholes by mid-morning Friday.
