Developers promise to fix stinky water issues in Pearland neighborhood

Last year, fed up neighbors blamed the City of Pearland for their stinky water problems. Now, those responsible are promising to fix it.

PEARLAND, Texas – Homeowners dealing with stinky water for years in a growing Pearland subdivision smell relief.

“I’m not getting headaches anymore,” Cynthia Millhollen, a homeowner said. “Nobody’s getting tummy bugs anymore.”

There are changes on tap from builder KB Home and homeowners who are almost ready to yank down their ‘buyer beware’ yard signs.

“I’m glad that they responded and hope that they follow through,” Kathy Stark, a homeowner said.

Last year, fed up neighbors blamed the City of Pearland. They came to KHOU 11 News for help. After our stories, city crews flushed water lines leading into homes and changed treatment plants for the community. Also, city public works employees daily monitor chlorine levels.

Still, Millhollen’s water smelled. Inspectors told her the problem was inside her house. Her builder, believing the issue was a city problem, refused to help at first, Millhollen said.

So she paid a plumber $621 to flush and bleach her pipes.

“He didn’t seem to find it odd at all that there were so many of us with the same issue by the same builder,” Millhollen said. “He said likely that’s what’s happened.”

KB Home told us they are working with neighbors, including Millhollen and Stark, to resolve the problem.

“KB Home remains committed to our customers’ satisfaction and has been actively working with the City of Pearland to address our homeowners’ concerns with the water quality supplied to our Canterbury Park community,” a spokesperson said in a statement. “We have been working with the City of Pearland to assist them with their action items that are necessary to improve the water quality.”

“We have an appointment set up for Friday,” Stark said. “(KB Home) said they would come and bleach our lines.”

The company is also keeping new buyers in the loop.

“The water smells fine to us,” Kellie Hernandez, whose family recently purchased a home in the area.

“All is well and KB is sending me a check to reimburse me for (my plumbing bill),” Millhollen said.

That check should arrive this week, a KB Home spokesperson told KHOU 11 News. Once the check clears, Millhollen said she will remove her ‘Buyer Beware’ yard sign.
