National Taco Day: Best spots for tacos in the Houston area

We used Yelp reviews and viewer comments on social media to guide us to some of your favorite spots.

HOUSTON - It’s National Taco Day, and the KHOU Facebook page is buzzing with your suggestions on where the best tacos in town can be found.

There have been hundreds of responses.

However, with so many options, where do you begin?

It would be nearly impossible to decide who makes the best tacos in town. We used Yelp reviews and viewer comments on social media to guide us to some of your favorite spots.

“The beauty of a taco is you can eat it for morning, noon and night, and I think that’s what makes it great," said Sharon Haynes, owner of Tacos A Go Go.

So what makes a good taco?

Experts said it’s a good tortilla, fresh ingredient, good spices and a great salsa.

“One thing I like about tacos is that no matter where you go, everybody puts their own imprint on it, and they’re very good," said Peter Slattery, a customer at Taqueria La Famosa.

In Pearland, the best tacos can be found at Taqueria La Famosa, according to Yelp.

“We individually make every one of them here in house," said Cleto Medrano, owner of Taqueria La Famosa. "Our corn and flour. We have myself and we have my aunt who works in the kitchen with me. We make them every morning one by one. It’s a lot of work, but it’s definitely worth it.”

Next, social media suggestions took us to Stafford to Soliz Casa de Tacos.

Owner Eric Otto said word of mouth has kept them in business for more than 30 years.

“Every year I have a new crop of elementary, middle school, high school,” Otto said. “The kids will go out to college. They’ll come back, and they’re like, ‘Oh, man. My tacos man. My tacos.’”

If you’re one of the lucky ones, you may even get a taco named after you.

“I do have a lot of people that are like, ‘Please can I get on the menu? How do I get on the menu?'" Otto said.

According to Yelp, the best tacos in the Katy area are found at Taqueria Tex-Taco, and if you’re in Cypress, they suggest heading over to The Taco King.

In Houston, Tacos A Go Go is a fan favorite.

“The street tacos that are sort of stewed meats from Mexico. Super flavorful. Some are spicy, and they’re really good," Haynes said.

Luckily, if you live in the area, you won’t have to go far to find some great food.

“In Houston, pretty much every day is National Taco Day,” Haynes said.
