Monday was an exciting day for a Missouri City couple, lucky enough to be contestants on Wheel of Fortune.
Wheel of Fortune is one of the longest running game shows drawing millions of viewers a week, many of whom, shout puzzle answers at their screen, willing their favorite contestants to win.
On Monday evening it was no different at the Gutowsky home in Missouri City except this time, they were watching themselves behind the wheel.
“Is it cool seeing mommy and daddy on TV?” Joel Gutowsky asked his 4-year-old daughter.
Husband and wife Joel and Kim Gutowsky have always loved the game show, so last year, when tryouts were held at Houston’s Memorial City Mall, they were there.
“I was like, ‘we are going to this!’”, said Kim. “This is our shot!”
After a rigorous audition process, they were one of only eighteen couple selected nationwide.
“We were screaming and jumping and dancing and so excited!”
The couple flew to California and filmed back in November; however, had to keep the outcome a secret. Which is why friends and family anxiously watched the episode with them Monday night.
The couple got off to a great start but after a few unlucky ‘bankrupt’ spins on the wheel and a ‘lose your turn’, they started to get a little frustrated.
“It was defeating,” said Kim. “I was tempted to just grab the wheel and be like, ‘I'm going to spin now!’”
However, near the end, the couple won the prize puzzle and ended up walking away with more than $11,000 in cash and prizes, including a trip for four to Hawaii.
“From beginning to end,” said Joel, “they were a top-notch group and it was awesome.”
