KATY, Texas - As the devastating rains fell on Houston last week, a Katy woman was in labor and her midwife was trapped.

Thanks to a giant swan, a good neighbor and a little bit of creativity, there is a very happy ending to this story.

At just one week old little Bennett Haley has already made quite a splash in this world. On April 18th, as torrential rains fell on Katy, Andrea Haley went into labor.

“We were able to get to the Katy Birth Center,” Haley explained.

Although a large pickup truck allowed Andrea and Daniel Haley safe passage, midwife Cathy Rude was stuck, flooded in at her home.

“As the day went on I became more and more concerned,” explained Rude. “As we backed the car out the driveway, went down about two houses, my car flooded.”

“She’s more than just a medical provider or care provider,” Andrea said referencing Rude, “she really does build a personal repertoire with you and a relationship.”

Andrea and Daniel decided to drive their truck to Rude’s flooded neighborhood where they hatched a plan.

“We were kind of like, ‘well… what are we going to do about this?’”, said Andrea. “And that's when we saw this Swan!”

“With somebody floating on it down the middle of the street,” added Cathy. “She rolled down the window and yelled, ‘Hey! Can you give my midwife a ride on your swan?’”

That giant swan riding neighbor jumped off paddled over to Cathy, picked her up then floated her out of the flood. The Haley’s and Rude were finally on their way to the Katy Birth Center.

“A few hours later we had a baby,” said Rude.

Bennett was born at 9:33 p.m. weighing 9 lbs. 12 oz. and appropriately a water baby, being born in a birthing tub.

Bennett’s splash thanks to the swan, not a stork.
