KEMAH, Texas — The day-long search for a Kemah Boardwalk employee, who dived into Galveston Bay to help a stranger, continued into Wednesday evening.
Todd Riddle, 56, saw the kayaker struggling around 9:30 a.m. and jumped into action.
“He swam about 100 yards offshore and on his return trip he was unable to make it back safely," a Coast Guard spokeswoman said.
Another bystander was able to help the kayaker get to shore, but the boardwalk employee has not been seen since he jumped in the water.
"The family has been informed. In regards to how they feel they're very mournful. They're sad at this time so we're definitely asking the public to send out they're prayers to the family," said Kemah Police Chief Walter Gant.
Gant said Riddle is related to a Kemah police officer.
About a dozen agencies have assisted in the search for Riddle.
The Kemah Boardwalk is a waterfront entertainment center located about 30 miles southeast of Houston.
