Katy HS cheerleaders invited to perform in Rose Parade -- but they need help

"You walk down the street and people will say, 'Oh, my gosh! I can't believe y'all are going to the parade. That is such an honor,'" said Patty Henson, who coaches the cheerleaders and dancers.

KATY, Texas - The Katy High School cheerleaders and dance team received some of the best news in September: They are invited to perform the opening number in the Rose Parade.

It's the first time the team has received the invitation.

The team has until Dec. 15 to raise the money needed to travel from Katy to Pasadena, Calif. Initially, the high school students hoped all 80 members could travel and participate in the once-in-a-lifetime experience. That would cost about $167,000.

But with about $60,000 raised on donations so far, the team is now working to send half the squad.

"You walk down the street and people will say, 'Oh, my gosh! I can’t believe y’all are going to the parade. That is such an honor,'" said Patty Henson, who coaches the cheerleaders and dancers.

"This is huge. I want everybody on my team to be able to go," said senior Alexis Granhold. "We do a lot of stuff to raise money. We have a GoFundMe."

The team has spent the last six weeks selling pies and rolls for Thanksgiving dinner, as well as honey-baked hams. They've also held two school dances.

More than a dozen local businesses have donated to the trip or allowed the team to solicit for donations outside of a business.

"And if you could help us in any way, or spread the word, that would be great," said cheerleader Mallory Broussard.

Those interested in donating can do so here.
