July 4th forecast causing concern for Wednesday celebrations

The City of Houston Mayor's Office says it has a series of emergency back-up plans should the weather take a turn for the worse.

HOUSTON - The potential for severe weather has some communities in the Houston area already canceling July 4th events.

Tomball and Galena Park have already canceled fireworks shows and Katy has cut back some of its events.

The Freedom Over Texas event in downtown Houston is still on schedule for Wednesday, though.

“A lot of the fireworks we use are waterproof now,” said fireworks technician Doug Allen. “The stuff that isn’t, is covered in plastic, so we’re prepared.”

Flash flooding is possible across the area Tuesday evening and Wednesday afternoon.

The City of Houston Mayor’s Office says it has a series of emergency back-up plans should the weather take a turn for the worse at Eleanor Tinsley Park.

“I have no doubt in my mind that people aren’t going to allow a little rain to keep them away,” said Mayor’s Office Director of Special Events Susan Christian. “We’ll keep an eye out on how things are going and if we need to enact an emergency plan we will do that.”

Previous summer events at Eleanor Tinsley Park have turned into mudfests as a result of flash floods.

An emergency evacuation was ordered at the park during the Free Press Summerfest in 2017 because of lightning.

Thousands of soaked partiers were sent scrambling for safety during the evacuation, seeking shelter at nearby businesses and neighborhoods.

The chance of storms has many neighbors celebrating a day early in League City where organizers made the call at 3 p.m. to continue to host July 4th events on July 3.

The events in League City begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday with a fireworks show scheduled for 9 p.m.

The Freedom Over Texas event begins Wednesday at 4 p.m. with fireworks scheduled to begin at around 9 p.m.
