'I wouldn’t wish this on anybody': Mom of 5-year-old injured by suspected drunk driver speaks out

“I wouldn’t wish this on anybody," Mayra Medina said. "They’ve only given her a couple of hours to live, and we have all her family here.”

HOUSTON — A 5-year-old girl has been left brain damaged and on life support after a suspected DWI crash that happened early Sunday morning in east Houston.

Prosecutors say the driver of a truck was intoxicated when he ran a red light near Harrisburg and 75th Street, hitting a sedan.

Inside the Cadillac was Mayra Medina, her sister and two of Medina's children, Giselle Luviano, 5, and Joel Marintez, 15.

“I wouldn’t wish this on anybody," Medina said. "They’ve only given her a couple of hours to live, and we have all her family here.”

Medina says they were heading home from a Sweet 16 party when they were hit.

“My light was green," Medina said. "He made the wrong decision to just take the red light.”

Everyone inside the car was hospitalized, but the one who was hurt the worst was the smallest and youngest -- Giselle.

Giselle had only just turned 5 last month.

“The little girl is upstairs fighting for her life," one family member said. "She’s unrecognizable. Her head’s so swollen, her eyes are so swollen, there has to be justice. Something else has to be done.”

Prosecutors say Israel Lugo, 34, had been drinking at a the Timeout Number One bar off the Gulf Freeway.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office is now investigating the bar to see how much Lugo was served.

Lugo is charged with two counts of intoxication assault, one for Giselle and one for Lugo's wife who was the passenger in his truck.

“When the accident happened, when he plunged into me, I knew the car came to a stop, I saw him right there," Medina said. "He was in front of his truck, and I was honking because I couldn’t open the door, and I was screaming, 'Help me, help me my family is here.' He didn’t bother to help me."

Lugo has been released on a $5,000 bond.
