Hundreds stand in line for hours for Christmas tamales

The line outside of The Original Alamo Tamale started at 4:30 a.m. on Christmas Eve. The crowd stood in line for almost two hours to get their hands on dozens of homemade tamales.

HOUSTON - Tamales started steaming early Christmas Eve at The Original Alamo Tamale. And we mean 2 a.m. early.

"It's a madhouse in there, but we'll get through it," said supervisor Lucrecia Garza.

On Christmas Eve alone, they'll steam 10 to 15 thousand dozen. That's more than 120,000 tamales.

"This line started at 4:30 a.m., and it'll be like this until 4 p.m.," said Garza.

The Christmas crowd stood in line for almost two hours to get their hands on dozens of homemade tamales.

"I heard they're great, and we can't have Christmas without tamales," said Brianna Parker.

Some families spend almost as much time in the car just getting to Houston's east end to take home a few dozen.

"Driving from Waller, Texas I had to stand in line for these tamales," said Carolyn James. "They are the best. They're so good. They're moist. They have good flavor and a lot of meat."

It's a Christmas tradition, where families bring their kids and even their pups. And if you didn't get through the line Monday, expect an even longer wait on Christmas morning.

"It goes to show how good they are," said Parker.
