How to find out if a rental property flooded

The widespread flooding now has some people wondering how to find out if a rental property they’re interested in flooded.

So many homes were damaged by Hurricane Harvey, including a lot of apartments.

The widespread flooding now has some people wondering how to find out if a rental property they’re interested in flooded.

Howard Bookstaff, General Counsel for the Houston Apartment Association, says landlords are not required to disclose that information to potential tenants.

“There’s no law that requires an apartment complex to notify you voluntarily whether an apartment flooded, but certainly you can ask questions,” he said.

He recommends asking apartment management as well as other residents. They should answer questions about a property’s history of flooding.

If you believe a rental property has mold or water damage, HAA recommends putting a maintenance request in writing with your landlord.

Apartment management is responsible for repairing damage related to the storm.
