HOUSTON – A homeless man says he helped save a woman and her two kids from their burning southeast Houston home.

The fire broke out on Dieppe near MLK, not far from the South Loop, around 1:30 a.m. Friday.

The family whose home caught fire was allowing the man to stay with him. The man told KHOU 11 News he heard a boom while everyone was asleep, and he went into the owner's bedroom to find debris on top of the mom.

The man said he pulled the debris off the woman and got her out safely, and he went into the children's bedroom to wake them up. Neither child, ages 8 and 10, was hurt.

Firefighters said something in the home's attic crashed through the ceiling and caused the fire.

Extensive damage was reported, but there were no injuries.
