HISD teaching assistant struck, killed by train

Bystanders say the victim was trying to beat the train across Lockwood near Bennington when it hit her.

An HISD employee was struck and killed by a train in northeast Houston Tuesday afternoon.

Johnnie Harris, 69, was a beloved special education teaching assistant at Kashmere High School, HISD confirmed in a statement.

Bystanders say Harris was trying to beat the train across Lockwood near Bennington when it hit her. Some children were also crossing the tracks, but they all made it across.

The victim's family rushed to the scene when they learned about the accident. H

"Honor her memory and keep moving," said Frank Harris, her son. "She was loved by a lot of people."

Kashmere teachers and students also gathered at the accident scene.

“Ms. Harris was a treasured member of the Kashmere family," the HISD statement said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to Ms. Harris' family. She will be deeply missed."

Harris had been with HISD since 1991.

Houston police are investigating the accident, which happened about a block from Kashmere.
