HOUSTON — A Harris County Sheriff's deputy and the person he was attempting to rescue are safe after they were both swept away by swift water.
Sheriff's officials said the two were swept away near the Lake Houston Marina.
The deputy is a member of the sheriff's office search and rescue team and was attempting to rescue a man who dove past a high-water barricade.
The man got out of his car, officials said, and was swept away by the strong current. When the deputy went to rescue the man, he too was swept away.
The sheriff said they were able to grab the branches of trees and bushes and held on for more than 45 minutes until a helicopter spotted them and they were rescued by boat.
The sheriff said the incident was a really close call and that both men are in good condition, despite being shaken up.
The man will not be charged, the sheriff said.
