SUGAR LAND, Texas – Dramatic video showed Sugar Land police saving a woman trapped inside her Jeep partially submerged in a pond. Neighbors said it was the third crash there in two years.
The most recent crash happened Saturday morning right before 6:30 a.m. The Sugar Land Police Department said several witnesses called and reported a vehicle traveling at a high rate speed. The vehicle jumped a curb near the intersection of Meadowcroft Blvd. and Westcott Ave., accelerated off an embankment and ended up several hundred feet offshore.
Patrol units arrived within minutes, and three police officers jumped into the lake known to have alligators and snakes. They waded through the water that was deep enough to cover officers’ chest-level body cameras but did not sink their rescue efforts.
“I said oh my God,” Lubna Kaissi, a witness said. “They are amazing.”
Kaissi watched the rescue from her backyard. Officers ran around her fence into the water to save a woman who crashed after she apparently fell asleep at the wheel then woke with her Jeep partially underwater. Her doors were locked and windows did not work. Within minutes of witness 911 calls, she was freed.
“I guess she couldn’t get out,” Kaissi said. “So I really went out and thanked (police). We appreciate them very much.”
The woman behind the wheel didn't want to be interviewed on camera but said she is very grateful and plans to thank the officers in person.
Neighbors said two other cars have crashed into the same pond. It sits on a dead end street with no lights. Though some want to see a barrier built along the banks, all are happy no one has been seriously hurt.
