HOUSTON – One of the leading voices in Houston cricket is being remembered as a man who was a friend to many.
Khurram Ibrahim died Tuesday when his car crashed into the back of an 18-wheeler, leaving behind a trail of traffic on Southwest Freeway.
Family friends say the Cricket World announcer lost control of his car, while heading home from a funeral.
“It’s very difficult not to miss such a person. Basically, he left everyone in shock,” Majid Rizvi said.
Think of your favorite broadcaster for any sport and know Ibrahim was that person for Houston cricket. As president of the Houston Cricket League, Rizvi describes how his friend’s energy managed to bring much needed attention to the game.
“First thing that comes to mind is that energy and support. No matter who you are, he brings that energy where people who don’t even know cricket, want to play because of him,” said Rizvi.
What most will know about Ibrahim comes from being in front of the camera. His non-profit work within the Pakistani community and his efforts to bring cricket to Houston, largely go unnoticed.
Not that Ibrahim would have it any other way.
“What Khurram has started is a legacy that we should all continue and to an extent learn from it. The kind of person he was, I don’t think we see a lot of those every day,” Rizvi said.
Funeral arrangements have been set for Friday.
