WALLER COUNTY, Texas – A dog who was left to die in a Waller County creek is getting a second chance.

A good Samaritan found the 6-month-old puppy near Double Culvert Road and Cedar Creek Road on Sunday. The dog’s mouth was taped shut and was weighted down with heavy chains.

The puppy, they’re calling Rusty, has been recovering at the Baker Vet Clinic ever since.

Deputies are still trying to find whoever is responsible for the animal cruelty. Waller County Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest.

Rusty was found with his mouth taped shut and chained to a weight in a Waller County creek. Now he's getting a second chance at life after he was adopted by a 911 dispatcher who helped rescue him.

In the meantime, the 911 dispatcher who took the call reporting the abuse has found another way to help. She adopted Rusty on Friday.

“I actually thought I was sending the deputy out to put him down, because it sounded that bad,” said Donna Mace. “When I found out the next morning he had made it and he was doing well, I told my husband. I just feel like it’s something I had to do.”

Now, the puppy who was left for dead has a new home.

“We’ve got a big yard and a lot of loving family members. He’s not going to want for a thing,” Mace said.
