'A behind-the-scenes team': Volunteers step up to help first responders

"I love to help out our community, especially our firefighters, they come out here, they risk their lives, so this is what I can do to help out."

HOUSTON — When it’s an emergency, we all turn to first responders for help. But often, those first responders need help, too. Some volunteers in Katy are hoping to assist.

We saw them this past weekend after a plane crashed into a neighborhood community center. The pilot was killed. Firefighters and law enforcement were there for hours, struggling to piece together what happened, as the heat index kept rising.

But a tent was being set up nearby and volunteers were delivering food and drinks for the emergency workers.

“What we're doing is providing sustenance, drinks and whatever else the firefighters need to be able to rehab themselves to be able to go back into the fire scene," says volunteer Lou Fabricant.

Meet the good men and women who make up Harris County Emergency Services District 48's Rehab Division. They are all volunteers.

They give firefighters and others a much-needed break at the scene, so they can recharge themselves.

"I love to help out our community, especially our firefighters, they come out here, they risk their lives, so this is what I can do to help out," says volunteer Adriana Moreno.

They’re headquartered in Katy, but they go wherever needed.

They were called out to the big ITC fire in Deer Park back in March and they helped out non-stop during Hurricane Harvey.

And the firefighters appreciate their support.

“They are a behind-the-scenes team, and they like it that way, which is why I like to brag on people who aren't looking for kudos," says Lt. Simon VanDyk of Harris County Emergency Services District 48.

The volunteers of the Rehab Division are ready to help during the next big emergency.
