20 apartment homes damaged in La Porte fire

The Red Cross has been called in to assist impacted families.

LA PORTE, Texas -- Firefighters responded to a La Porte apartment complex Tuesday morning after a fire broke out.

The fire was reported around 9:15 a.m. at the Delta Heights apartments in the 3100 block of Old Highway 146.

No serious injuries have been reported at this time.

A spokesman for the fire department said two buildings caught fire and 20 apartment homes were destroyed.

Officials aren’t sure how many of the damaged units were occupied, but several families have been displaced.

The Red Cross is helping the City of La Porte set up a shelter for those families at the community senior center.

Fire fighters blame high winds for the fire jumping to a neighboring building. Fire investigators are working to figure out how the fire started.
