Buffalo Bayou Park up for prestigious national award

Buffalo Bayou Park features the Johnny Steele Dog Park, a new and improved jogging trail, public artwork and the underground Buffalo Bayou Cistern.

HOUSTON — Buffalo Bayou Park is a Houston treasure.

Not even Hurricane Harvey could keep this local hot spot down for the count.

Now, the green space is in the national spotlight.

It’s one of five finalists for the 2019 Rudy Bruner Award for Urban Excellence. Every year, one space in the country gets this prestigious design award.

These are beloved spaces that impact the community in more way than one.

Buffalo Bayou Park features the Johnny Steele Dog Park, a new and improved jogging trail, public artwork and the underground Buffalo Bayou Cistern.

Another Texas park is also a finalist – downtown Sulphur Springs in northeast Texas.

The winner will be announced in June. The gold medalist gets $50,000 to keep the project going strong.

The other four finalists get $10,000.

Way to go, Buffalo Bayou Park!
