8-year-old inspires mayor to fix Heights sidewalk

A letter from a little girl made a big impression on Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner.

A letter from a little girl made a big impression on Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner.

Eight-year-old Sophie Blitz wrote the mayor last month asking him to fix a sidewalk in her neighborhood so she could safely walk and bike to school.

“I couldn’t ride over it so I had to ride on the street,” Sophie said.

She met the mayor on Friday after crews repaired the unfinished sidewalk at 5th and Cortlandt in the Heights.

“You are the best,” Mayor Turner told Sophie. “And because of your letter, we are out here responding and we got the sidewalk fixed – not only to help you, but to help the other kids, as well.”

“I’m very, very happy that it got fixed,” Sophie responded.

“It got fixed because you took the time and wrote me," said Mayor Turner.

The Harvard Elementary second-grader even helped lay a ramp for wheelchair access.

Sophie and her younger sister thanked the mayor by giving him homemade thank you cards.

Sophie also made good on her promise to treat him to a gelato.
