Traveling with CBD products could land you in jail

CBD products can still be tricky when traveling based on current regulations.

HOUSTON — CBD-infused products are growing in popularity.

Your CBD Store Spring owner Ally Horner is also a customer. She uses the marijuana-related medicinal extract for leg pain.

Products in her store cannot contain the intoxication-inducing chemical THC.

“Of course, we can’t make health claims,” Horner said.  “But there are a lot of people coming in for that pain relief.”

CBD products can still be tricky when traveling based on current regulations. Horner never travels with them herself.

“We always advise not to travel with it because it’s kind of a gray area,” Horner said.

In fact, the TSA's website states possession of marijuana and cannabis-infused products, including things like CBD oil, is illegal under federal law.

“TSA security officers do not search for marijuana or other illegal drugs, but in the event a substance that appears to be marijuana or a cannabis-infused product is observed during security screening, TSA will refer the matter to a law enforcement officer,” it states.

A 72-year-old grandmother reportedly ended up in jail after her CBD oil was detected at a customs checkpoint at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. A great-grandmother was arrested at a Disney World checkpoint for having CBD oil in her purse that was legally purchased in her home state, although charges were later dropped.

“You can get in trouble and it’s not even worth the risk,” Horner said.

Horner believes you should take CBD before you leave if needed for pain and then seek out a place to buy more wherever you end up.

There is pending legislation in Texas that would allow CBD with higher concentrations of THC, the chemical that produces a high, to be sold. But laws vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.
