Woman shot, killed in front of her children in north Houston

HOUSTON - A woman was shot and killed at an apartment complex in north Houston Sunday afternoon, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

Family members have identified her as 32-year-old Ashanti Hunter, a mother of three.

Deputies responded to a weapons disturbance call after the 911 caller stated a boyfriend shot his girlfriend during an argument.

HCSO Homicide detectives say Hunter was trying to flee with her children when the gunman shot her.

She was found in the passenger side of a vehicle outside the apartment. One of her children was in the backseat, but investigators say all the children witnessed their mother's murder.

"Once the shooting started, the kids took off running, right out of their shoes. Now, that's all evidence," said Sgt. Greg Pinkins.

Hunter's cousin had just dropped her children off back at home when the altercation began.

"I knocked on everybody's door, nobody answered their doors," said Myriane Rodriguez. "I heard gunshots and it was my cousin in my passenger seat."

The male suspect has not been identified. He fled the scene but was caught by deputies shortly after.

The investigation is ongoing at this time.
