The shocking prom night death of a 17-year-old girl took center stage in a Houston courtroom Monday.
Eddie Herrera is on trial for domestic violence in the death of Jackie Gomez, his prom date. The MacArthur High School student died on May 16, 2014 at the Hyatt North Houston Hotel.
An autopsy showed Gomez consumed large amounts of hydrocodone and alcohol. She had also been strangled. The cause of death was undetermined.
Herrera claims he strangled Gomez during rough sex and she seemed fine after that. He said they went to sleep but he couldn’t wake her the next morning.
In a police interrogation video played in court, Herrera’s mother can be heard telling her son that she gave the teens hydrocodone and alcohol because she quote, “Just wanted y’all to have a good time.”
In the video, she can also be heard telling her son, “She knows she did wrong … but nobody made her [Gomez] take the pills.”
Herrera’s mother also booked the couple’s hotel room, according to prosecutors.
“Prom is supposed to be fun. It's a big event in a lot of high schoolers' lives but you have to be safe and parents have got to play their role and be the parent.," said Assistant District Attorney Justin Wood. "You can facilitate having a nice time at prom without going to these lengths.”
She will face trial at a later date for giving Gomez pills and alcohol.
