HOUSTON — A 16-year-old is dead and another teen is in critical condition after Good Samaritans jumped into action to pull them from a burning car on the Katy Freeway near Post Oak Boulevard overnight.
The rescue was caught on camera. The driver suffered severe injuries, but the passenger did not survive.
Spring Branch ISD identified the teen Thursday as Henry Davis, a junior at Memorial High School.
Crisis counselors will be made available at the Memorial High campus next week when students return from spring break, Spring Branch ISD officials said in a statement.
Houston Police said this started after officers saw a Mercedes Benz C43 speeding on the Katy Freeway feeder road.
Police tried to initiate a traffic stop after the Mercedes ran a red light at Silber.
The Mercedes then ran a red light at North Post Oak. Police said that is when the driver miscalculated the split in the road up and the car flew off the overpass and down about 20 feet to the I-10 on-ramp.
That’s when those Good Samaritans saw the crash and stepped in to help.
Our cameras were rolling as they pried those two men out. The car ended up on its roof and a small fire started. The men say they were able to get the driver out fairly quickly and administered CPR, but struggled to get Davis from the mangled mess.
“They were trying to get that passenger guy outside but he was crushed underneath the vehicle,” a witness said.
Both the driver and Davis were transported to a local hospital where Davis later died.
