Several suspects in custody after smash-and-grab at Willowbrook Mall

During a media briefing about this robbery, detectives mentioned that a few of the suspects had felony warrants for similar crimes.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Five suspects were arrested Monday after a smash-and-grab at a jewelry store inside Willowbrook Mall.

Police are still searching for one more suspect believed to be involved.

According to Houston police, four out of the six suspects walked inside Zales and used sledgehammers to smash glass cases. Detectives said the suspects stole thousands of dollars worth of jewelry before running out of the store.

Two getaway cars were waiting outside for the suspects. One car got into a wreck while trying to leave the mall's parking lot.

Thanks to security video, detectives were able see the cars the suspects used to getaway. Officers in the area spotted the vehicles and tried to get them to surrender, but the suspects ran away.

Five of them were caught and taken into custody. Police believe they know the identity of the one suspect at large.

During a media briefing about this robbery, detectives mentioned that a few of the suspects had felony warrants for similar crimes.

“Unfortunately this is a sign of the times. We do have a lot of suspects that don’t believe in working like regular people and this is like their job,” said Detective Russel Gray with the Houston Police Department's Robbery Division.

The two getaway cars and some of the stolen jewelry was recovered by police.

Detective Gray said the suspects will likely be charged with felony theft or robbery by threats.

No employees were injured during the smash-and-grab. Crime scene investigators are still at the jewelry store collecting evidence and talking to witnesses.

Willowbrook Mall is open for business.
