SAN MARCOS, Texas — Two Texas State University students were found dead Sunday morning in an apparent murder-suicide.
According to the City of San Marcos, police responded to a residence on Highland Drive at 9:30 a.m. to investigate a report of two deceased individuals. Officers found one man dead inside with multiple gunshot wounds and a second man dead in the backyard from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Officials said a friend of both men found them right before calling police Sunday morning. Both of the deceased, who were described as close friends, were residents of the home and attended Texas State.
The deceased were identified as 24-year-olds Matthew Bond Pfluger and Connor Patrick Shannon. Next of kin has been notified.
Based on the initial investigation, police believe Pfluger shot Shannon multiple times inside the residence before attempting to kill himself with a knife, then proceeded to shoot himself in the backyard.
Benjamin Rae lives nearby on the same street as these two Texas State students. He said he woke up for work this morning and found police cars all along the road.
"There was a crime scene outside, and I was just really confused," Rae said. "There were a bunch of cops everywhere.”
Rae said while he's well aware of some of the other police investigations going on in the area recently, he was surprised to have something happen so close to his home.

"It’s crazy because living right here with everything that’s going on right now in San Marcos, I would never have expected anything like this to happen anywhere close to here," Rae said.
Garrett Grady was neighbors with Pfluger and Shannon. He said he moved into the neighborhood around the same time as these two and that they were always friendly to him.
“Whenever we’d see each other, they’d wave and say hello," Grady said. "I still can’t believe it. They were such quiet people. They don’t really cause trouble, and then you find out they’re dead. I feel terrible for the parents and the families of the victims."
This is the fourth homicide police have investigated in San Marcos so far this year and the second apparent murder-suicide.
Texas State released the following statement on Sunday:
"San Marcos Police Department notified Texas State University today that two currently enrolled students, Matthew Bond Pfluger and Connor Patrick Shannon, were found dead this morning in their off-campus housing. The investigation is ongoing and is being handled by the San Marcos Police Department."
