Police chase ends with suspect in custody in Memorial area

Police began chasing the driver in a Jeep Compass around 4:15 p.m. Friday in Bellaire.

HOUSTON — A rush-hour chase ended Friday evening with a suspect in custody after he led Bellaire and Houston police on a chase in an alleged stolen vehicle for nearly an hour.

Police began chasing the driver in a Jeep Compass around 4:15 p.m. Friday in the 5400 block of Bellaire Boulevard. Bellaire Police said that's where their stationary automated license plate reader identified a maroon SUV that was reported stolen by the Houston Police Department.

Bellaire PD tried to make a traffic stop, but the driver took off, going from Bellaire into the Galleria area into Highland Village and River Oaks before going back into the Galleria area and eventually into the Memorial Villages.

At some point, police appeared to drop back and the suspect continued driving through the Memorial area for awhile.

He eventually parked behind a brick wall on Old Oaks Drive near Memorial and got out. From Air 11, the suspect appeared to walk calmly through the residential neighborhood until police found him and arrested him.
