HOUSTON – Houston police say a woman shot and killed her common-law husband after finding him with another woman.
Debra Davis, 58, has been charged with murder in the death of her common-law husband, 49-year-old Rodney Johnson. Police say she admitted to her role in Johnson's death.
According to HPD, Johnson was shot in his family's driveway Tuesday night on Cathedral Drive near Wilmington in Sunnyside. His family says he was meeting with a girlfriend when Davis showed up and pulled out a gun. Johnson later died at the hospital.
Johnson's cousin says he and Davis lived together in Missouri City but Johnson would meet other women in Sunnyside.
The other woman was at the scene when the shooting occurred, but she was not hurt.
Neighbors tell us they had seen Johnson and the woman he was with the night he was killed on their street together in the past. They say the woman would ride her bike to meet with him.
“His girlfriend came and she shot him because he’s messing around with women,” said Johnson’s cousin Robert Johnson. “You know these things are love things.”
Johnson had served a 20-plus-year prison sentence, according to his cousin. KHOU 11 News confirmed Johnson had been convicted of aggravated robbery in the past.
Police say Davis turned herself in Wednesday around 7 a.m. Davis was transferred from HPD headquarters this afternoon to be booked at the Harris County Jail. She has yet to be arraigned.
Davis is still legally married to another man and is currently in the midst of a divorce, according to a divorce attorney who spoke with KHOU.
