HOUSTON – A former postal worker has been charged in connection with the kidnapping and killing of a co-worker who vanished in September.

Don Gaines, 30, was arrested Tuesday on a federal charge of kidnapping.

Gayla Roy, the mother of Gaines’ two children, was reported missing in September after she didn’t show up for her job at the Aldine Bender post office, where they both worked.

A few days later, Gaines confessed that he had kidnapped Roy and killed her, according to court documents.

Federal investigator say Gaines choked Roy in her car and believed she was dead. While driving to Louisiana, Roy regained consciousness. Gaines then allegedly stopped on I-10, dragged Gaines into a wooded area and shot her in the head.

Using GPS information from the victim’s vehicle, investigators searched a wooded area along I-10 and found skeletal remains. DNA confirmed the remains were Roy.

If convicted, Gaines could face the death penalty.
